The next PS5 system update has been officially announced by Sony via the PlayStation Blog, and it includes a number of significant enhancements to the device, including a significant SSD boost and a feature I’ve been hoping for since launch.
With a comprehensive deployment to all PS5 users anticipated in the coming weeks, the system software beta phase kicks off today for a small group of participants.
The support for larger-capacity SSDs is the first major improvement in this new console patch. This update increases the maximum size of M.2 SSDs that the PS5 can accept from the previous maximum of 4TB to 8TB.

It goes without saying that any M.2 SSD that is attached to the PS5 storage expansion drive will continue to have to adhere to all of Sony’s requirements and need a heatsink for cooling. However, an 8TB SSD should be sufficient if you want to install the majority of the finest PS5 titles all at once.
But be prepared to pay an outrageous amount for the privilege. There aren’t many solutions that fit Sony’s requirements, and even the finest internal PS5 SSD, which has a 4TB model, is presently $329 on Amazon, after a $220 discount!
The latest system upgrade also includes support for Dolby Atmos, which is a significant addition. Sony states that owners of appropriate Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices, such as soundbars, TVs, or home theater systems, can now enjoy 3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech.
For even deeper levels of immersion in the audioscapes of PS5 games, Tempest 3D AudioTech explicitly renders to the Dolby Atmos audio devices now in use, including overhead channels.
